TERRY SCROGGINS WINS BASSMASTER SOUTHERN OPEN
Scroggins Scores Another on Kissimmee in Come-From-Behind Win
LAKE WALES, Fla. — Coming off last week’s Bassmaster Classic with a seventh-place finish, Bassmaster Elite Series angler Terry Scroggins of San Mateo, Fla., continued his domination in Florida BASS events Saturday winning the Bassmaster Southern Open on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. His three-day total of 53 pounds, 10 ounces, was more than one pound ahead of Terry Segraves of Kissimmee, Fla., who finished second.
Scroggins’ win Saturday was a repeat for him on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, where he won a 2005 Bassmaster Open event. In all, Scroggins has scored four BASS victories- all in the state of Florida. His prize Saturday was $6,000 in cash and a Triton/Mercury rig valued at $50,000.
The 38-year-old Elite pro, who Saturday night was on his way to Texas’ Lake Amistad to compete in the season-opener of the 2007 Elite Series starting next Thursday, said he had just one day of practice for the Southern Open.
“I was lucky,” said Scroggins of his win. “My first-day partner gave me the heads up on what was happening here.”
He started slow, ending the first day, Thursday, in 11th place. By Friday, he had moved up to fifth as he established his spot and pattern on Lake Tohopekaligia, where he fished all three days of the tournament.
“Today I caught all my fish in 20 minutes in a 10-yard stretch in the center of Toho,” he said, adding that his catch were all post-spawn bass. “And the wind, unlike other days, wasn’t bad today where I was.”
He said his primary lures were a chartreuse Excalibur XR-50 and a Carolina rig with a Yum Houdini junebug worm.
Finishing third was Bassmaster Elite Series pro Charlie Hartley of Grove City, Ohio, with 47-4. Fourth was Paul Kimball of Glastonbury, Conn., with 43-14.
The leader for the first two days of competition, Sean Dassau of Helena, Ala., managed a catch of 8-3 on Saturday to finish in fifth with 43-5.
Three-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year and 1995 Bassmaster Classic champion Mark Davis, 43, of Mount Ida, Ark., finished sixth with 40-11. Davis had begun the final day of competition in second place.
Purolator Big Bass honors on Saturday went to Segraves. He received a bonus of $1,000 for his 7-1 caught in less than two feet of water on a Mann’s Bait Minus 1 on Lake Hatchineha.
Segraves, who works for the Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau to promote fishing opportunities in the area, said his second-place finish was his best “in a while.”
The Purolator Big Bass of the Tournament award was won by 19-year-old Kyle A. Fox of Lakeland, Fla., who toted a 12-5 lunker to the scales on Thursday.
In the co-angler division, the winner of $2,000 in cash and a Triton/Mercury boat rig valued at $32,000 was Alonzo Evans of East Hartford, Conn. His winning weight of 42-2 was anchored by his final-day limit of 27-5, including a 7-8 that earned the co-angler Purolator Big Bass award of $300.
Evans, who on Saturday sat in seventh place, caught his big fish on a Mann’s Minus 1 on loan from Segraves, who was Evans’ randomly paired fishing partner on Saturday.
“I feel great, I really do,” said Evans, 51, who is currently switching careers by going into the construction business. “This is my best finish in a BASS tournament.”
Co-angler Joe Edwards of Florida, who moved from 16th to first on Friday, ended up in second with 27-14. Larry Blount of Alabama was third with 24-11.
Fourth was Luke Gritter of Michigan with 21-9. Rounding out the top five was Marty Scoggins of Georgia with 20-10.
The Kissimmee tournament, which attracted 195 pro division entries and paid out more than $175,000 to the top 39 pros, was the first event of the 2007 Bassmaster Southern Open circuit. The second Southern Open competition will take place May 3-5 in Manning, S.C., on Santee Cooper Reservoir.
In the Bassmaster Central Open division, the first event of 2007 will be March 15-17 in Denison, Texas, on Lake Texoma.
