BASSMASTER WEEKEND SERIES ANGLERS COMPETE FOR FISHING’S BRASS RING

Championship in Alabama Will Send Winner to Bassmaster Classic

CELEBRATION, Fla. — Next week, 56 of the most talented weekend anglers in the world will gather on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville to compete in the ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series Championship.  Up for grabs is the biggest carrot in the sport- the final spot in the 2007 Bassmaster Classic.

Additionally, the winner will receive a $100,000 top prize in the championship event which will be held Jan. 25-27. And the champion receives a guaranteed opportunity to enter the Bassmaster Open division of their choice.

To qualify for the championship, weekend anglers performed well on a number of qualifying levels. The top-8 boaters and non-boaters qualified through their performance in seven regional championships. Anglers qualified for the regional championships as the top performers in 30 divisions.

Among those participating are 2006 EOBS Champion Jeff Coble and Alabama’s Jamie Horton, a former Classic participant.  Coble and David Wright, also qualified for the upcoming championship, have been partners fishing tournaments since 1996.

”We’re probably the only set of partners in the tournament because all the other competitors live in areas scattered across the country,” said Coble, a two-time Classic qualifier and regional sales rep for Triton Boats.

Coble and Wright have maintained a successful partnership through the years.  The partnership is legal under BASS rules as competitors are permitted to share information but may not receive help from anyone not competing in the tournament. Last year, on Florida’s East Lake Tohopekaliga it was Coble who won the championship while Wright finished fourth.

“Unlike last year’s championship — that was a small lake that was not fished much in tournaments, so it was a real level playing field — with a lake like Guntersville there’s going to be some people that have experience on it,” Coble said.

“David and I spent quite a bit of time down there, but we didn’t do that well. We definitely have not dialed in on them after our pre-fishing rounds.”

Nestled at the base of the Appalachian Mountain range, the 69,000-acre Lake Guntersville is billed as one of the south's most beautiful lake. The lake has 949 miles of shoreline and stretches 30 miles from Scottsboro south to the city of Guntersville.

After two rounds of competition, the field will be cut to the top 12 boaters and non-boaters and total weights from the first two days will carry over. Daily weigh-ins and launches will be held at Civitan Park with launches starting at 6:45 a.m. and weigh-ins beginning at 2:45 p.m.
